Mark Blezard reviews golf on the island.
There are two golf courses on the island of Madeira, Palheiro Golf (www.palheirogolf.com) and Santo da Serra Golf Club (www.santodaserragolf.com), which is ranked as the 12th best golf course amongst the 75 existing in Portugal. The Palheiro Golf Course, 18 holes par 72, was designed by Cabell Robinson.
Palheiro Golf Club is just to the West of Funchal, whereas Santo da Serra Golf Club is closer to the airport, above the bay of Machico. Both offer wonderful botanical and sea views and both have significant pedigree. At Santo da Serra, the Machico and Desertas courses stage the Championship for the Madeira island Open, part of the PGA European Tour.
On the neighbouring island of Porto Santo, you have a third option. Former world champion, Severiano Ballesteros, played a key role in the design of the island’s course (www.portosantogolfe.com) – an 18-holer divided between par-threes, par-fours, and par-fives (six of each).
